MICRO - AND NANO- NEEDLING
Micro Needling and Nano Needling have their place in skin rejuvenation for almost every client and they treat many of the same skin conditions. Both nano-needling and micro-needling address the same skincare concerns and they both use a needling pen to create micro-channels in the skin. The main difference between the two is the depth that the needles are able to penetrate into the skin. Nano-needling only punctures the first layer of the skin (epidermis) while micro-needling penetrates into the deep dermis. If you are concerned about fine lines, wrinkles, swelling, dark pigmentation or sagging skin, then nano-needling is for you. When it comes to deeper acne scars and wrinkles, hair regrowth, stretch marks and hypo-pigmentation the deeper micro- injuries associated with microneedling would be the best choice. With the goal to provide the best outcome both procedures can be used together to advance the results for many skin conditions. You will often begin to see smoother brighter skin within 1-2 days. Your skin actually continues to improve over time (weeks to months) with collagen remodeling underneath the skin's surface. Within the first 2-3 weeks, most patients will see their pigmentation improve, followed by deeper skin regeneration that keeps improving over the ensuing months. Collagen production will have longer lasting results, but does take several months to see benefits. To maintain the results of your treatment, you'll need multiple sessions and perhaps other complementing treatments.
What is Micro-Needling?
It is a mechanical procedure, which makes use of a micro needling pen containing ultra-fine sterile needles. The needles are simply injected into the skin which leads to formation of small punctures. The pain experienced is of a very low level because the needles just prick the layers of the skin. In case a person has a very low threshold of bearing pain, he or she can make use of the numbing cream.
The small channels created by the needles are like wounds. Just as every wound sets the healing process of the body into motion, these injuries also stimulate the collagen formation process of the skin. The body stops producing more collagen as a person ages. Microneedling face skin is a way of reminding the body to restart the collagen and elastin production process, which then leads to the formation of a new layer of skin which is thicker and smoother than before.
Micro needling helps in removing dark spots, surface scarring, fine wrinkles, crow’s feet, acne scars, dark circles and bags under the eyes to give your face a glowing and healthy look. The facial skin becomes firm and smooth giving you a younger look.
Microneedling is most often used on your face to target:
In addition to facial concerns, microneedling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body. Scarring on other body parts may also be treated with this procedure. However, microneedling is primarily used on the face.
Like all cosmetic procedures, microneedling isn't without risk. The most common side effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days. Call your doctor if you notice more severe side effects, such as:
- bleeding
- bruising
- infection
- peeling
Microneedling isn't invasive like plastic surgery, so the recovery time is minimal, most people require very little downtime, if any at all. You may notice skin irritation and redness within the first few days following the procedure. This is a natural response to the small injuries made by the needles in your skin. You can go back to work or school after the procedure if you're comfortable. Some people apply camouflaging makeup during the first few days as the redness dissipates. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is a must. After microneedling, your skin works fairly quickly to rejuvenate new tissue. In theory, you should see results within a couple of weeks.
What is Nano-Needling?
Nano-needling is also known as nano-infusion. This is a less aggressive, "no needle" alternative to microneedling. Nano-needling uses a mono-crystaline silicone cartridge with nano technology to boost transdermal delivery and efficacy of skin care products. The procedure uses the same device along with a nano needle cartridge to specifically treat the uppermost layers of the epidermis. The nano cartridge contains a disc of "needles", each having a diameter equal to about 1/3 of a human hair, which is almost invisible to the naked eye. When these pins gently touch the skin, they form up to 200,000 invisible nano channels in the outermost layers of the skin to allow better absorption of active ingredients. These micro channels in the skin are a direct line to deliver products (nourishing serums) below the skin barrier and stimulate the regenerative processes and collagen production in the skin. The skin cells rearrange themselves to allow nutrition to pass through the skin barrier in order to help the absorption of skin care products and to effectively feed the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. There is no pain, inflammation, bleeding, discomfort or downtime. Nano-needling is safe for all skin types and tones. There is no risk of post traumatic hyperpigmentation.
Nano needling can be used by itself, or as an addition to facials, peels and microdermabrasion.
